DataVita Lanarkshire AI datacentre will fully rely on National Grid

The Chapelhall development, envisioned to run entirely on 1GW of renewable power, has seen its plans adjusted, according to DataVita.
The datacenter firm, which had publicly stated its intention to fuel a substantial AI undertaking near Glasgow using green energy, has now conceded that the entire operation will draw its power exclusively from the National Grid. This Lanarkshire endeavor, which is considered a crucial element of the UK's broader AI strategy, had previously assured that it would source 1GW—an output comparable to a modest nuclear reactor or the nation's biggest windfarm—from sustainable origins. However, after The Guardian questioned this commitment, DataVita clarified that the arrangement remains "subject to final commercial agreements, planning, grid and consenting processes."
Why it matters
This shift impacts the sustainability claims surrounding major AI infrastructure projects in the UK. Readers should watch how this revised power sourcing affects the overall environmental footprint of key national AI initiatives.
