EU charges TikTok with failing to protect users' mental health, algorithm deemed harmful

The European Commission has leveled charges against TikTok, asserting that the platform is neglecting its responsibility to safeguard the well-being of its users.
A preliminary determination released on Friday stated that the application's underlying algorithm possesses the potential to be detrimental, guiding younger and more susceptible viewers into "rabbit holes they cannot easily escape from." This action directly challenges the operational framework of the company. The regulatory body determined that TikTok exposes individuals to an unending flow of material that carries the risk of exacerbating issues such as anxiety and eating disorders, thereby failing to protect users' mental health.
