Ten major online platforms, including Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, Kick, X, Twitch, and Threads, were mandated nearly eleven months ago to either suspend or deactivate the accounts of users they assessed to be younger than sixteen. This sweeping regulation, which has made Australia's under-16s social media ban a globally recognized policy, is now facing its most significant legal scrutiny on Tuesday. Reddit, alongside the Digital Freedom Project—an advocacy organization spearheaded by NSW state MP John Ruddick—is petitioning the high court to invalidate the legislation.
