Tech sell-off drives US markets down by nearly $1tn after subpar earnings reports

The Nasdaq exchange has seen nearly a trillion dollars wiped from its valuation in just seven days, a significant drop fueled by a tech stock sell-off that began earlier this month and intensified following underwhelming financial disclosures from major technology firms. This downturn also accounted for roughly two trillion dollars in losses over the span of a month.

The market saw the S&P 500, which tracks the 500 most valuable corporations in the United States, dip by over 1% on Friday, resulting in the erosion of hundreds of billions of dollars in market worth. Despite having reached a record high during the current month, the index was positioned to completely negate its gains for October.

The decline in technology shares exerted further downward pressure on the Nasdaq composite, causing it to fall by more than 3% and similarly erasing hundreds of billions in value. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average experienced a smaller decrease.

This market shift reflects investor uncertainty regarding whether the massive amounts of capital being invested into artificial intelligence will swiftly translate into tangible financial returns.
