What we know about Binance's $6.3bn hack

A staggering $6.3 billion (equivalent to £4.7 billion) has been compromised in what is being considered the most significant cyberattack in history against Binance, the globe's largest cryptocurrency exchange. The cryptocurrency behemoth revealed that while half of the affected assets have been secured, a substantial amount remains under the control of the perpetrators, though the exchange subsequently reported that it has "begun recovering" certain funds.
Experts from two analytics firms have pointed toward a hacking unit originating from North Korea as the likely source of this incident, although no official entity has accepted culpability. Binance chose not to offer a direct statement regarding any potential connections between the breach and North Korea.
BBC cyber correspondent Joe Tidy is providing further insights into the nature of this hack and advising those who might have been impacted. Readers can follow the ongoing coverage of this event through our live updates.
